Dodd Architecture is a design practice focusing on architecture, urban design and master planning.

Recently re-established by Richard Dodd, Dodd Architecture is located in the rural environment on the Matakana Coast north of Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand.

The practice seeks to create thoughtful buildings and spaces that support and enrich the environments in which they are constructed and the lives of the individuals and communities they serve.

Dodd Architecture is open-minded and curious, finding inspiration in both the everyday and the obscure. We look to the past as much as to the future and believe that an engagement with both is essential to make buildings that contribute positively and meaningfully to our built and natural environments.

Projects are informed by a sensitivity to context, an understanding of client requirements, and the realities of economic and environmental sustainability. The quality of the work comes from a considered understanding of these relationships.

Richard Dodd

I have been a member of the New Zealand Institute of Architects since 1989. I retired from Jasmax at the end of 2021 to re-establish Dodd Architecture. During my 16 years with Jasmax I worked in a design leadership role on many significant projects across a broad range of sectors, scales and complexity. Previously, I worked for several other well-known established and emerging Auckland practices, including for myself.

I am interested in creating quiet, restrained, and humane spaces and places that enrich our lives and resonate with our human spirit.

As well as and often in parallel with my work I have a passion for sailing and, when I get a chance, for drawing and painting. These interests enhance my understanding and deep love of the natural environment and beautiful landscapes I have had the good fortune to live and work in. I take seriously my role as a custodian of the built and natural environment and see the preservation and improvement of both as critically important.

I was introduced to architecture at an early age. Growing up in a house my architect father Brian Dodd designed and accompanying him on various architectural site visits was to have a lasting and significant influence on me. Throughout my career I have strived to build on my father’s legacy and develop my own architectural vision.
