GATE SHOUSE

The Gate Shouse sits upright in the landscape, a sentinel guarding the territory. The simple mono pitched building form typical of rural utility buildings, appears shaped by the very high winds that sweep across the narrow landmass separating the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean. A striking feature are the oversized windows framing the picturesque landscape formed by windblown sands. A tension between exterior and interior is curated to protect the occupants from glare and gale.

A companion building to the Long Shouse, the Gate Shouse also utilises timber milled and processed on the property.
